4 Levels of healing

September 17, 2026 By Paola Pizzuto Osteopath Edinburgh

For some people recovering from and illness or feeling better after a period of being run down, happens in a very short period of time, for other ill health seams a constant battle.

In my clinic I see a wide spectrum of patients, for some, osteopathic treatment it’s enough to recover, for other things are way more complex.

The latter are usually people who have tried various treatments, changed their diet, taken supplements, exercised more, or followed the advice they were given.  And yet, something still feels unresolved. Perhaps the pain keeps returning. They’re constantly tired, the digestion isn’t right. Or had investigations that came back “normal”, yet they know they’re unwell.

Patients quite often ask me how do I describe the way I work. Here it’s a brief overview of how I see health and illness and how I can help people in their journey to better health.

As an osteopath and functional medicine practitioner, I look at health across various interconnected levels, working with the physical body, internal biochemistry, energy systems, emotions, together, not separately.

This is often where breakthroughs happen, even for people who’ve been told “everything looks normal” or “we’ve tried everything.”

Looking Beyond the Symptom

Pain, fatigue, digestive problems, hormonal changes and recurring health issues can have many contributing factors.

Your movement patterns may influence pain. Your digestive health may affect how you absorb nutrients, how you feel.your mood, your immune system etc.. Chronic stress can influence sleep, energy and recovery. Nutrition, lifestyle, previous illness and emotional experiences may also be relevant.

This doesn’t mean there is always one hidden cause. It means that your health deserves to be looked at in context.

This is the thinking behind my Integrative Approach to Health.

The Levels of Healing

1.The Physical Body: Structure & Mechanics

As an osteopath, I look at how your body moves and functions as a whole — not simply at the area where you feel pain.

Previous injuries, scars from surgery, tension or lack of mobility from musculoskeletal structures or internal organs, issues with dental occlusion and restrictions elsewhere in the body can all be relevant.

Osteopathic treatment support mobility, blood flow, vascular and lymphatic drainage, muscular skeletal balance, breathing mechanics and overall, the body’s ability to adapt to physical demands and support physiological processes.

The aim is to understand how your body is functioning as a whole.

2.Biochemistry & Physiology: Looking Beneath the Surface

The physical body is only one part of the picture and in some case just osteopathic treatment it’s not enough to bring the body back to a more balanced state and experience symptoms relief.

Drawing on Functional Medicine and homotoxicology principles, I look closely at digestion, hormones, toxicity, inflammation, immune function, and nutrient balance. Using kinesiology and lab testing, gentle detoxification, nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle guidance to bring the body back into a better equilibrium.

3.The Nervous System and Energy

Your nervous system is constantly responding to your environment, including physical demands, stress ( physical, emotional and biochemical ), illness and lack of sleep.

When the body remains under prolonged stress, some people may notice changes in sleep, digestion, energy, pain sensitivity or recovery.

As part of my individualised approach, I may use kinesiology and bioenergetic techniques to explore the relationship between your nervous system, wellbeing and body healing capacity.

4. Emotional Health: When Stress Becomes Part of the Picture

Our physical and emotional experiences are closely connected.

Periods of chronic stress or difficult life experiences can sometimes coincide with changes in sleep, digestion, energy, tension or pain.

This doesn’t mean that symptoms are “all in your head.” Your symptoms are real.

It means that the nervous system, emotions and physical body are constantly communicating. Where appropriate, I help patients explore these patterns and develop greater awareness of the relationship between emotion and physical wellbeing.

Whatever brought you here, physical pain, emotional overwhelm, or the sense that something deeper needs attention, you deserve care that sees the whole picture.
