“I’ve tried supplements.”
“I’ve changed my diet.”
“I’ve seen different specialists.”
“My blood tests are normal… but I still don’t feel like myself.”
These are some of the most common things I hear from patients when they first come to see me.
Many people living with chronic pain, digestive problems, fatigue, Long COVID, autoimmune conditions or unexplained symptoms feel as though their body has somehow “forgotten” how to heal.
But what if your body isn’t broken?
What if it’s simply doing exactly what it was designed to do?
Your Body Is Always Trying to Protect You
Every second of every day, your brain is asking one simple question: “Am I safe?”
If the answer is yes, your body can focus on growth, repair and healing.
If the answer is no, your body switches into protection mode, a response is essential for survival.
If you suddenly stepped into the road and a car came towards you, your nervous system would instantly react.
- Your heart beats faster.
- Your muscles tense.
- Your breathing changes.
- Your senses become sharper.
- You move without even thinking.
This is your body’s remarkable survival system at work. The problem isn’t the stress response itself. The problem is when it never completely switches off.
When Survival Mode Becomes Your New Normal
For some people, the nervous system remains on high alert long after the original threat has disappeared.
That threat may have been:
- An infection
- Chronic stress
- Physical injury
- Surgery
- Ongoing pain
- Digestive problems
- Emotional trauma
- Environmental toxins
- Years of pushing through exhaustion
Over time, the brain can begin interpreting everyday life as if danger is still present.
Instead of feeling calm and resilient, you may find yourself stuck in one of several protective states:
- Constantly anxious or “wired”
- Feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope
- Exhausted despite sleeping
- Emotionally numb or disconnected
- Fluctuating between high energy and complete burnout
Many patients describe it perfectly:
“I feel wired but tired.”
Your Nervous System Influences Much More Than Your Emotions
Most people think stress only affects their mood.
In reality, your nervous system communicates with almost every organ in your body.
When your body remains in a prolonged state of protection, it can influence:
- Digestion
- Immune function
- Sleep
- Hormones
- Energy production
- Pain sensitivity
- Blood sugar balance
- Inflammation
- Recovery after illness
This helps explain why people often develop several symptoms at the same time rather than just one.
A dysregulated nervous system impairs on nutrient absorption, detoxification, disrupt immune function, and makes recovery from illness more difficult.
Why Doesn’t My Body Recover?
One way of understanding this comes from an emerging concept known as the Cell Danger Response.
According to this model, every cell in the body can temporarily switch into a protective state when it detects a threat, such as an infection, toxin, injury or significant stress.
In this state, the cell prioritises protection over normal growth and repair.
This response is completely normal.
The challenge arises if the body struggles to switch fully back into its healing mode after the danger has passed, hence some people continue to experience persistent symptoms long after the original trigger has gone.
Healing Happens When the Body Feels Safe
Based on my clinical experience ,Healing and protection cannot fully happen at the same time.
When your brain perceives safety, your body is better able to:
- Digest food
- Absorb nutrients
- Repair tissues
- Regulate inflammation
- Support healthy immune function
- Produce energy efficiently
The body has to move from “nervous system immobilisation” towards a more regulated, “relaxed” state, where the body can resume repair and recovery.
This Doesn’t Mean “It’s All in Your Head”
One of my biggest concerns is that patients are often told: “It’s just stress.” That can feel dismissive.
Stress doesn’t mean your symptoms are imagined. It means your nervous system, immune system, hormones and body are deeply connected.
The symptoms are real. The fatigue is real. The pain is real. The digestive problems are real.
The goal isn’t to convince yourself you’re fine. The goal is to understand why your body has remained in a protective state and what may be preventing it from moving back towards recovery.
How I Approach This in Clinic
As an Osteopath and Functional Medicine Practitioner, I don’t look at one symptom in isolation. Instead, I ask questions such as:
- What triggered your symptoms?
- Has your nervous system had the opportunity to recover?
- Could previous infections still be influencing your health?
- Is chronic inflammation keeping your body on high alert?
- Is your gut supporting your immune system?
- Are nutritional deficiencies reducing your resilience?
- Are structural restrictions affecting your body’s ability to regulate itself?
Treatment is never about one technique.
Depending on your individual needs, your care may include:
- Gentle osteopathic treatment to support the nervous system and improve movement
- Functional Medicine and kinesiology testing to investigate underlying contributors to chronic illness
- Nutritional support
- Lifestyle guidance
- Strategies that help calm and regulate the nervous system
- Support for sleep, recovery and resilience
Every treatment plan is personalised because every patient’s story is different.
Your Body Hasn’t Given Up
One of the most powerful shifts happens when patients stop asking:
“What’s wrong with me?” and begin asking: “What has my body been trying to protect me from?”
Your symptoms may not be the problem. They may be your body’s attempt to keep you safe.
When we begin to understand those signals—and support the body as a whole—we create the conditions in which healing becomes possible.
